THE GRAN SEÑOR PALO CORTADO FROM BODEGAS URIUM AND THE CELLER CAN ROCA FOOD PAIRING ARE THE PROTAGONISTS DURING THE FIRST DAY OF VINOBLE 2010
"It is an enourmous honour for me to be able to open a wine with over 100 years of history", was the remark of the Commissioner of Vinoble Pancho Campo MW
Portugal, one of the countries invited to this edition will have it's big day tomorrow with the guided tasting of Port wines which will be lead by Brotherhood of Port Wine
Jerez de la Frontera, 30th May 2010 – The first day of the Seventh International Exhibition of Noble Wines Vinoble, which will be taking place from today until Wednesday 2nd June in Jerez de la Frontera, has begun with two important events during the morning in the Alcázar of Jerez. After the opening ceremony with the Mayoress of the City, Pilar Sánchez, Vinoble 2010 saw the opening of a true wine relic in the form of the Gran Señor de Urium, to welcome in the Exhibtion. As well as this, the prestigious Catalan restaurant Celler de Can Roca begun the harmonising sessions in the Torre del Homenaje with a pairing for 50 people, which combined the most diverse array of food to accomopany these noble wines.
The Gran Señor de Urium wine, a 100 year old Palo Cortado, which was opened by the Commissioner Pancho Campo MW, is bottled in fine crystal from the Czech Republic and comes with a closure of 24 carat gold. The tasting of this relic involved by the Commissioner himslef as well as the Mayoress of Jerez, the President of The Spanish Royal Gastronomic Academy, Rafael Ansón as well as the owner of Bodegas Urium, Alonso Ruiz. A true gem of the Exhibition and valued at over €20,000, Campo described it as: “The opportunity to open this bottle is perhaps not the best time given the economic crisis, but I believe that it adds an extra level of prestige to help make Vinoble an even more special Exhibiton”.
Following the opening of the Gran Señor was the first of the gastronomic sessions which was coordinated by chef Josep Roca, owner of Celler de Can Roca. This One Michellin Star rated restaurant owner paired a dozen wines with verious tapas dishes. Roca explained to an audience of 50 people that “noble wines are able to change dishes, cava in sauces, or pairing anchovies and truffles via a Merlot”.
This first pairing came through the organization of the Royal Spanish Gastronomic Academy, guided by Rafael Ansón, who added that “not only can you drink wine, but you are also drinking all of the healthy nutrients that your body needs”. “These Harmonies will put this to practice and will do so with exceptional wines, such as those from Jerez”.
As well as this, the Mezquita in the Alcázar hosted the wines of Tokaji, which was, as always, greatly anticipated and was carried out by Tokaji Rennaissance. The wines included were:
1. Alana Tokaj, Tokaji Muscat „Betsek" 2005
2. GrĂłf Degenfeld, Andante 2007 Furmint Botrytised
3. Patricius, Tokaji AszĂş 5 puttonyos 2002
4. Disznókő, Tokaji Aszú 5 puttonyos 2000
5. Alana Tokaj, Tokaji AszĂş 6 puttonyos 2005
6. GrĂłf Degenfeld, Tokaji AszĂş 6 puttonyos 2003
7. Patricius, Tokaji Aszú „Bendecz" 6 puttonyos 2000
8. Disznókő, Tokaji Aszú 6 puttonyos 1999
This great day also hosted a tasting of Fondillones and Moscatels from Alicante, the wines of Bordeaux, Biological ageing, and Muscats of the world, lead by Sarah Jane Evans Master of Wine.
The first day of Vinoble 2010 will close this afternoon with the grand tasting of wines from Montilla Moriles, lead by the winemakers of that region, and a conference about climate change and noble wines carried out by Jaume Gramona. The winemaker stressed the importance of making the Spanish wine industry more aware of this great problema which will only continue to affect the sector. Gramona explained the current situation of noble wines which are suffering “for their own special qualities” than other categories of wine due to the effects of climate change. “All of the Spanish wine regions are suffering because of climate change, and we are fighting every day to ensure that Gramona is doing less to worsen the problem”.
The second day of Vinoble 2010 will be marked with the guided tasting of Port wines with the participation of the Portuguese wine sector, a guest country of Vinoble 2010.
